What you need to know about SIDS
Like many childhood diseases, there is an incredible amount of myth, fact, information and opinion surrounding the cause of SIDS.
I believe all parents have the right to know all that is known about SIDS, and not just what the media and the medical establishment decides it would like you to know.
For this purpose, here is a summary of the FACTS that you may not hear anywhere else.
15 Points Every Parent Should Know About SIDS
1. SIDS is the leading cause of death in babies after one month of age, and most SIDS deaths occur in babies who are between 2 and 4 months old. On average nine infants die every day/night from SIDS in the United States.
2. In over 50 years of research, US SIDS organizations offer no identified cause of SIDS. The American Academy of Pediatrics has even gone as far to point fingers at parents and daycare workers.
3. From 1891-1892, there was an epidemic of infant and child deaths caused by a toxic gas triggered by a common fungus mildew that reacted with an arsenic laden paint.
4. SIDS is a post World War II epidemic that coincides with the introduction of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to the construction of crib mattresses in the early 1950s.
5. PVC contains chemical compounds of arsenic, antimony and phosphorous. These three elements can be changed into gaseous forms that are highly toxic nerve agents when converted by common household mold and mildew.
6. The gases created from phosphorous, antimony and arsenic are 100 times more lethal than Hydrogen Cyanide and 1000 times more deadly than Carbon Monoxide.
7. SIDS is a developed countries epidemic. Research suggests that it does not exist in underdeveloped countries.
8. In the summer of 2006, identical twins died on the same mattress. It is estimated that the deaths occurred within twenty minutes of each other.
9. In the US, the Back-to-Sleep Campaign launched in 1991 dropped the SIDS death rate by 33%.
10. New Zealand, where mattress wrapping was first introduced, suffered from the highest SIDS death rate of any country in the world. New Zealand has since has experienced a decline of SIDS by nearly 80%, since wrapping mattresses in a special blanket.
11. In over 10 years since the mattress wrapping protocol was developed, an estimated 700,000 infants in 30 countries have slept on wrapped mattresses. There has not been one reported SIDS death on a properly wrapped mattress.
12. Day Care Centers have a death rate that is nearly 7 times greater than the National Average. In 1999, out of 13 SIDS deaths in San Diego, 7 occurred in Day Care Centers.
13. New Zealand mandates that all crib mattresses in Day Care Centers be wrapped in a gas impermeable cover. Since that mandate, no day care center has lost an infant to SIDS.
14. Major baby mattress stores in England now have signs advertising that their mattresses contain no arsenic or antimony.
15. Children who have survived the first year of life sleeping on PVC mattresses, have been shown to have higher than normal antimony levels. Antimony has properties similar to lead. It is identical in nature to arsenic, which is a lethal poison. As of yet, there has not been any research on the potential danger of high antimony levels in children.
If the Toxic Gas Theory is correct (and there is strong scientific evidence that it is) and SIDS is caused by these toxic gases from crib mattresses, then you owe it to your babies health and well being to do one of the following:
