“There is NO such thing as a Chemical and Toxin-Free ‘Organic’ Mattress!”

“They ALL have harsh chemicals inside them…and here is why…”

"Listen to this first"

There is a MAJOR problem with so called ‘Organic’ mattresses. Most organic mattresses use wool as the flame barrier, and unfortunately, wool burns.

Wool is the fiber most commonly used in many ‘organic’ mattresses.

This means it has to be “chemically treated” to abide by the new law.
In fact, wool burns quite rapidly. If you want to see for yourself, go to the local Wal Mart and buy a roll of regular wool. Take a strand of it, and light a match to the end of it. You will see just how rapidly it ignites. (see pictures below)

As you can see, this strand of wool burned completely within 20 seconds!

Don’t get the wool pulled over your eyes by an organic mattress maker!

You see, the new flame proof regulations require that a mattress be exposed to an open flame blowtorch for 70 seconds…and NOT ignite for a period of 30 minutes afterwards.

This is VERY intense heat (over 1,900 degrees celsius!)

Common sense should tell you that very few things will not ignite when exposed to that kind of intense heat, and wool is no different.

In fact, wool will ignite and catch fire at 600 degrees celsius, as you can see from the chart below.

You can see in the table above that wool or ANY untreated fiber including cotton, rayon, nylon, or polyester will NOT pass the open flame test for mattresses. The flame temperature is more than three times that required for ignition. Plus you can see proof of ignition in the wool burning image above.

Some organic mattresses claim to have “inherently fire resistant” fibers.

Well, here’s the truth that you wont hear anywhere else…

Even what they call "inherently fire resistant" fibers contains toxic chemicals in the fiber itself. These mattresses either use chemically treated wool, another chemical system, or rely on chemically treated cotton batting (Boric Acid and Antimony) to pass the open flame test.

There are two ways, and ONLY two ways, to make a fiber “inherently fire resistant”:

1) Coat the fiber with Fire Retardant Chemicals (which is toxic), OR

2) Manufacture the fibers with Fire Retardant Chemicals incorporated into the fiber itself. These are called "inherently fire restraint" fibers, and are still toxic to humans.

Either way, the end result is the same. Harsh, toxic, and potentially dangerous flame retardant chemicals are inside of ALL ‘organic’ mattresses. There is just no other way to pass the open flame test without adding these chemicals. It’s a scientific impossibility.

What are these flame resistant chemicals added to Organic Mattresses?

Some of the Flame Retardant systems being used are “Rayon”, which contains Silica Glass (a respiratory hazard) and other chemicals such as Phosphates or Antimony.

Others use a chemical called Zirconium, which is a known respiratory irritant. (trade name: Zirpro)

Some fireproofing systems spray or apply chemicals. The CPSC says there are some chemical free systems, meaning the inherent systems. This double talk is very misleading because even the inherent systems have toxic and cancer causing chemicals in the fiber itself. The CPSC proved Antimony leaches out of these fibers and says we will absorb .8 mg Antimony every night from mattresses, which is 27 times more than the EPA says is safe.

There are no labeling requirements for the Fire Retardant Chemicals in any mattresses, so you will never know what is inside your mattress. The CPSC doesn’t want you to know, so they don’t require any labeling requirements.

So, what is the solution?

The ONLY real solution is to purchase a prescription mattress, with NO flame proof chemicals added. Fortunately, this is allowed for any consumer, as long as they have a Doctors prescription. To order a chemical free mattress, and have a doctor provide a prescription for you, please click here
